Bar Lad 4218 traces back many times to the great Southolm Bar Lad 50D. He is a great example of why we have chosen not to select on EPD numbers. If you breed for EPDs, you wouldn’t take a second look at this bull. Some of the best maternal bulls we have used in the past have EPD numbers in the toilet. If you look over history of what has and is still happening in the Angus breed, the cattle that have been bred for EPDs do not have the capability of staying in production for long enough to be profitable in a cow/calf operation. It is my job, as a seed stock producer, to use genetics that help keep cow/calf producers in business. We believe if you do not have decent longevity, it is impossible to stay profitable in an average price range.

Fairview Bar Lad 4218 has some of the great foundation genetics that my grandfather and father started with. We are still lining up some of the great old cow families that trace to these same reliable genetics today. In fact, our old 368 cow has some of the very same time tested names in her pedigree. 368 stayed in production for 22 years. A daughter, 580, stayed until she was 20. Another daughter, 940, raised her last calf at 19. He is a Bar Lad son and one of our young herd bulls. Average birth weight on 55 bull calves is 81 lbs and on 45 heifer calves is 76 lbs.
